NASA Langley 3-Strut Scramjet

Artist Depiction of X-43

The NASA Langley 3-strut engine was the first airframe-integrated scramjet engine model designed, built and tested by the Hypersonic Airbreathing Propulsion branch in the early 1970's. Two freejet models were built, one of OFHC copper for Mach 7 tests and one of Nickel 200 for Mach 4 tests.
